Working Closely with Customers to Make Smarter Choices for Their Packaging

As customer expectations continue to evolve, with increasingly complex packaging requirements, CorrBoard has extended its offering to ensure that it can meet with these needs.

Once upon a time, CorrBoard would produce sheet board and while there would be some variations on the board grade, fluting and paper grades, this was kept to a minimum.

Today, the business can offer more than 250 board grades and regularly produces over 130 of these across 8 different flute profiles, every month.

With the needs of customers changing and the demand for bespoke packaging increasing, Commercial Manager, Jonathan (Jonty) Frankland, explains how the company has adapted to provide a service that meets with customer expectations.

He comments:

“There are many sheet board manufacturers that will provide a smaller number of board grades but produce at high volume. While this is an approach that we could take, we decided that we would develop our offering and evolve our service.

“As such, we have installed lab testing facilities on site at CorrBoard, which allow us to analyse a board grade and provide a customer with recommendations on what specification they need.

“In some instances, a client will send us an email with a specification attached for us to match. In others, they will send a physical sheet or a box for us to analyse in the lab. Either way, given we have the facilities and the technical capabilities on site, we can provide feedback quickly.”

How Technical Insight Can Impact on Packaging

For those with no prior knowledge of packaging or manufacturing corrugated board, having a lab on site may seem like a step too far. However, thanks to this investment, not only is CorrBoard able to support customers with bespoke requirements but also to test quality.

Jonty continues:

“Having the lab on site means that we have the data to back up our recommendations. We aren’t just making assumptions; we are testing the board to ensure that it can withstand whatever is required under each specific circumstance.

“We must remember that our clients use board for a variety of reasons. It may be as packaging for standard delivery boxes or for promotional items. It may be for retail ready packaging or as a padding for fragile items. Whatever the reason, we must ensure the specification we provide meets with these needs.

“We are in a relatively unique position at CorrBoard. There are few corrugated sheet board suppliers that will go to the lengths that we do to ensure we meet with the exact requirements of our customers.

“For us, it’s good business sense. If we can turn orders around quickly and ensure that they are on time, in full and at quality, then we are doing our job. It also means that our clients will use us time and again.”

Where Specialist Insight Can Help

Since it launched more than 11 years ago, CorrBoard has supported sheet plants with their product requirements. Over time, it has built up a reputation as a company that can be relied upon, not to make boxes, but to deliver the sheets that will.

Jonty continues:

“The reputation that we have built up over the years is based on hard work. There has been a lot of trial and error, which has got us to the place that we are in today. Thanks to investments in our technical capabilities, we can be the trusted supplier that our clients need.

“In some instances, when we get a new customer call, they may not know what they need. That’s where our expertise can really come into play. It’s where we can help out most and offer the insight that our prospects require.

“It’s all about working together and using the experience we have to make life easier for our customers. After all, who doesn’t want an easy life!”
