The Small Details That Make a Big Difference When Producing Sheet Board

At CorrBoard, it is often the little things that have the biggest impact on quality. While the machines and systems are essential, it’s the attention to detail that ensures every sheet of board meets exacting standards.

Caroline Donson, Quality Assurance Manager at CorrBoard, explains:

“When you look at the processes from incoming materials right through to dispatch, it’s the small checks that make all the difference. Simple things, like making sure the right labels are allocated, the reels are hung correctly, and visual inspections are conducted, might seem minor, but they stop errors before they can happen and build confidence in what we deliver.”

Process Improvements That Strengthen Quality

Recent improvements at CorrBoard have focused on both process logic and system upgrades. Caroline highlights the changes in palletisation:

“We’ve recently upgraded the logic for palletising, particularly for performance packaging. It rotates certain sizes in a bespoke way to make sure the board isn’t overloaded or damaged. It may sound small, but this adjustment reduces the risk of collapse and ensures the right grade is sent for the right application, further down the supply chain.”

Lab testing remains central to quality assurance. Caroline continues:

“We do random lab checks on strength, calliper, and moisture, and these aren’t just boxes to tick. These small implementations help our team to understand why the board must meet certain specifications.

“Recently, we’ve been training more shopfloor staff across different shifts in lab methods, so they can see the end use of the board, understand the grades, and grasp why the strength and moisture tests matter.”

Digital Systems and Visibility

Upgrades to CorrBoard’s QMS system have further strengthened the robustness of the quality checks that are in place.

Caroline explains:

“Previously, internal non-conformance tasks had to be closed once completed, which limited further input. This new system allows tasks to remain open, giving managers and others the ability to review, discuss, and make informed decisions. “It adds visibility and ensures that any potential issues, like warp or incorrect grade for a performance pack, are resolved before the board leaves the site.”

Training to Meet with Excellence

Investment in training is another small detail that pays off. Caroline shares:

“We’re training more staff for ISO 9001:2015 audits and bringing shopfloor teams into the lab. This isn’t about compliance; it’s about giving people a well-rounded understanding of the process from incoming to outgoing materials.

“The more people that understand, the fewer mistakes will happen, and the more confident we are in what goes to the customer.

Why Small Details Matter to Customers

For CorrBoard’s customers, these intricate details translate directly into confidence and reliability. Caroline adds:

“When everything is done correctly and to the highest standards – from labels to lab test and pallet logic – it gives our customers peace of mind. They know they’re receiving the right grade, in the right condition, on time and in full. And when they see the quality consistently, it builds trust and encourages repeat orders.”

Attention That Prevents Errors

Caroline concludes by reflecting on what is often underestimated in producing sheet board:

“It’s easy to overlook the visual and minor details when you’re in the moment on the shopfloor. But taking that extra time to ensure things are correct – whether that’s how the board is stacked, the strap orientation, or the checks on a pallet – prevents issues down the line.

“Those minute details, backed by strong systems, training, and lab checks, are what make the difference between ‘just good enough’ and truly excellent board.”

At CorrBoard, meticulous attention to the small details, combined with robust systems and well-trained teams, ensures every sheet of board not only meets the standard but exceeds expectations.
